Mac OS Gimp 2.6.3 issues

Date:Sun, 30 Nov 2008 17:15:28 +0100

I just installed Mac OS Gimp 2.6.3.

So far I've found (true in 2.6.2 also):

o Shift-Ctrl-A in the toolbox for select-none is flagged
as disabled and can't be enabled. This worked for me
a year or so ago, I think it was 2.4.

o the user's copy of gimprc doesn't seem to be
   executed. At least inserting:

(toolbox-wilber no)

has no effect. It should take the Wilber image
out of the top of the toolbox window to give
you more real estate (Episode 66 of meetthegimp).

o dragging a file into the toolbox or image window
does not open the file. (dragging it onto the
gimp application does open the file)

o right clicking on a selected layer does not
pop up the layer options. (Ctrl-Click on a Mac).
It does nothing. I have to go to the image window
and select the Layer menu item, then Mask or
Transparency to get to the options I want.

o local help remains disabled in this version.

I'm guessing this is just difficult for the Mac
coders for some reason and will be fixed in 2.6.4
or 2.6.????

There are no Mac coders, the same source code is supposed to build and
work on all platforms.

Providing pre-built binaries for the platforms is usually done by
volunteers, and they should also know about any platform-specific
problems.

This is the first time that someone complains about non-working
shortcuts, though, so it might be a problem of your system.

The Mac code seems to lag behind by weeks or more, so I think they
may need to tweak some of the code to make it work, unfortunately.
And it seems rough edges still are there in Mac Gimp 2.6.3.

I tried to get to the Gimp mailing lists, but was roadblocked as
I described in another post on this group, as here:

I could accept the invalid certificate, but in a year of using
my Mac, I have NEVER had to do that. I think in this case it
may be okay, but then again, there could be a man-in-the-middle,
or, ... They should renew their certificate properly if they
actually run the lists.

And it looks like the only other way to ask about Gimp bugs
is to submit the heavy weight highly formal intense automated
bug report system (through filezilla or some such). I did one of
these about 10 years ago on some program, and about every 18 months
I'd get an automated email that someone had moved it here to
there, or someone else had reported it, but no one ever solved
the problem! So I'm sure that would go well.

Anyway, I haven't found any easy way to talk about Mac gimp
other than here, and it seems there aren't any or many Mac Gimp
users here.

It looks like I should just wait for a few more Mac releases.
It looks like I picked a bad time to try (yet again) to learn
more Gimp. My last foray was about 8 months ago before I
got on to other things. I came back, upgraded, and found some
things that worked before don't now. Guess I'll move on to other
things again and come back some time in the future. At least each
time I have a slightly elevated base of knowledge. Some day
it may all work!

Thanks!

If they have to and do not report this, then this would be
unfortunate, indeed. But as there are some users who build the source
code of GIMP on OS X without problems - even from SVN checkouts - I do
not think that is the problem.

Ah, I see. It was only reported in 2006. I guess my other forgotten

Well, I don't really believe it is an isolated problem. The 2.4
version I had was performing better. And I don't have any problem
with all the three dozen or more applications I use almost daily
on my Mac. This strongly suggests shortcomings in the dmg, or
something really silly I'm doing with the application. Which wouldn't
be a full blown bug reportable issue.

So I think I'll wait a couple of releases. However long they take.
So now, back to Financial programs and genealogy, and finish writing
that Sudoku puzzle solver (I know others have posted many of
these, I just like the challenge of coding it myself), and,...
I'll revisit Gimp some day... :-)

Exactly. And this is why Imendio has started porting GTK+ to OS X

Of course there's still a lot to do - the current state is described

I'm guessing this is just difficult for the Mac
coders for some reason and will be fixed in 2.6.4
or 2.6.????

Yes.

Yes, they should. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=389193

Well, it's as simple as this:

If an isolated problem like yours is not reported as a bug, then it
won't get fixed.

Ah, I see. It was only reported in 2006. I guess my other forgotten
question on bugzilla (> 10 years old) may yet be solved then! ;-)

There is a couple of programmers which works for Gimp (to count on the
fingers of one hand, if they reached to a dozen, then is it all), and
they give us for free an extrem enjoyful experience, nevertheless,
nothing is perfect and nobody.

But, after all, i think that's time for an Mac osx designed Gimp! Yes.
If i could, i would begin immediately to write code for this great
application!
My Gimp (2.6.3) doesn't work well, how your one...

Maybe you should define what an "Mac osx designed Gimp" is first?

Could be that what you want is a GTK+ that does not require X11 on OS
X. And for this task, it would be useful to have more OS-X-based
developers.

I mean an aqua -like interface, in pure Leopard design.
If i could, i would start immediately to script and to code for Gimp,
without hesitating.
But this type of conversion isn't possible, because this would mean,
programming it from scratch and cut the Navel cord with the Gimp-
developers, which works in maior number on Linux (a very good
selection)

Yes..exactly, X11 is the problem... or whatever else windowing
support, the endless add-ons drives me crazy. (much fewer is much
better, because.. we know. It depends from the situation, i
understand, but an solution must have a closely form, i mean, minor
code, but quality code, instead of a couple of scripts- i exaggerate,
in order to represent it more clearly)

Anyway, i don't want to underestimate or minimize -in any case- the
big effort of numerous programmers around the globe, everybody with
his experiences, (programming knowledge) and his groups, because this
generous mens and womens code in the good meaning to contribut a bit
to their preferred application, Gimp, excluding the problems of
platform compatibility, which operates in general very! well

Bigger than an application becomes, and more force(s) are needed to
control this 'Baby'

Exactly. And this is why Imendio has started porting GTK+ to OS X
natively, see http://developer.imendio.com/projects/gtk-macosx

Of course there's still a lot to do - the current state is described
as unusable by most developers. Anyone who is interested in helping
should have a look at the open bugs:
