Selection/Alpha Channel/PNG Format

Date:Sat, 10 Oct 2009 21:00:53 +0100

I have a portrait and want to select the background (somewhat one
color) and make the background transparent - so I can save the portrait
as a PNG file and use it in my email. I have used Photoshop before but
no longer have it. Have NEVER used GIMP before so I am at a loss. Can
someone guide me through the steps please? I have the latest GIMP 2.

If the background is reasonably uniform, you may have some luck with the
magic wand (4th tool):

1) add an alpha channel to your layer (Layer/add Alpha channel)
2) select the "foreground select" tool, and follow instructions at the
bottom of the picture.
3) Once done invert the selection: Ctrl-I or Select/Invert
4) Delete the selection Delete key or Edit/clear
5) save to PNG

Got as far as the select tool - but don't know how to use it - couldn't
find instructions at bottom of picture. Once the background is selcted
out (selection inverted, I think I can take it from there). Part of my
problem may be that the background, although 'relatively' on color, it
is actually shaded and I need to select a range or % to effectively get
rid of the background.

Questions: I got the image to show up in my email but:

1. The size is much too large and
2. The transparent part is very 'dirty' (there are small areas that
are not transparent). How do you make sure that there are no spots on
the background that are not completely transparent?

Thanks.........

Use the eraser tool. It will use whatever brush you have selected.
Remember you can change the size of the brush "on-the-fly" with the
square bracket keys [].

and I would do the clean up before scaling.

Thanks - I DID use the eraser tool. However, if some spots are not
100% erased, they can be hard to see - even though the checkerboard is
there. Maybe if there were a color layer under the checkerboard, the
spotty areas would be easier to see. What do you think?
Thanks.........

Thanks - I will try later today. First, I have to paint a room
(ugh!!). By the way, where can I find the differences between
Photoshop and Gimp 2? I'm at that point where I was going to purchase
the latest version of PS - but is Gimp 2 just as good?

If you do a google search for photoshop vs gimp you come up with any
number of opinions, most leaning towards PS, be sure to consider the up-
to-date only.

I always say, don't compare them, take each for what it is, but apart
from the cost, AFAIK the main gripes of photoshop lovers are;

The colour depth, gimp is 8 bit and PS is 16 bit. Serious photographers
make a big deal of this but it has never bothered me.

Adjustment layers ( but not for PS elements ), gimp does not have them
yet, possibly never will. As with anything there are work-arounds but
these are labour intensive.

The multi-window interface, gimp is really a linux app where several
windows are normal. You can tidy gimp up to 2 windows + however many open
images. I have PS7 running in linux using wine, you can have any number
of docks open each with tabs or not, IMHO not much different from gimp
except there is a containing window. So its either accept or use PS.

Printing - not too much of a problem in linux where there is the
gutenprint plugin or turboprint which I use. The standard windows gimp
print plugin is terrible but there is a port of gutenprint if you search
for it. Providing your printer is supported it works ok.

Plugins - PS plugins in general do not work in gimp. There is a plugin
for psplugins called pspi. This works in windows and usually does not in
linux. However it only supports older .8bf plugins and the equivalent are
often found in gimp scripts.

The list goes on.......

I would say it depends on your involvement in graphics. If it is
professional go for photoshop. Otherwise take a bit of time to find how
to use gimp. Apart from my very amateur photographs my interest is
video, so I make menus and DVD labels. Have not used my PS7 for some
time, gimp is sufficient.

Since you're into video, perhaps you can give me some tips. I have a
couple of dozen (at least) of tapes (VHS and what I think is 8MM (but
not sure). None of them is labeled as to what's on them and there are
multiple subjects on each tape. So, first, I have to review each of
them and put stickies on them so I know the subjects and approximate
dates. They go way back. Then, I will need software to edit them, put
titles on them and put them on DVD's. Never done this before. I
bought Nero 9 which has Nero Vision (which, I think, will do what I
want. However, maybe you have a different opinion. This is all family
stuff going back many years. Think you know what I mean. Do you have
any advice on editing, workflow, titling and putting them on DVD's? I'd
appreciate anything you can offer. In this area, I'm a newbie.

You are in luck, the interval for the UK snooker grand prix is now.

Since the original media is tape and VHS (the 8mm cassettes fit in a
caddy for playing on a VHS player???) you will need some method of
capturing the video on your computer. Modern cameras have firewire
interfaces but you will need either a cheap capture card (usually PCI) or
a USB dongle. The latter can be pretty cheap. The sort of thing to look
for is like this
<http://www.digitalpromo.co.uk/digitus-high-resolution-usb-20-video-
grabber-with-software-retail-p-3525.html>
and the VHS player needs composite video output - usually yellow/red/
black RCA(phono) plugs.

Since the source (VHS) is low quality do not expect too much. Use the
software that comes with the capture device (Nero Vision says "burn a
movie captured with an appropriate capture device") If you do have a
firewire camera and a firewire port on your computer I think Nero vision
will interface with it.
Probably Nero vision will be all you need for authoring a DVD and Nero
will burn the files but if you need to do a bit of editing there are free
editors which work with mpeg video files.

Look for Avidemux or maybe
<http://software.tutorialsroom.com/video-edit-master/>
good enough for a bit of cut-and-join.

Don't know what I was thinking about (an older format) re 8mm video.
You will need a camera and it might have analog or firewire output.

Back to the VHS and/or 8mm analog, one of my friends feeds his footage
into a DVD recorder using composite input (yellow RCA plug). Then takes
the DVD to his computer authoring. If you already have a DVD recorder
this will save buying a capture device.

Thanks - gotta look (I think I bought an iinterface that is supposed to
work with the camera and the VHS output too feed the signals into my PC
which has a DVD recorder). Will let you know.

Ah No
I am referring to a standalone DVD recorder. If you want to go straight
into the computer you will need a video capture device certainly for the
VHS. Video camera is probably firewire.

Just use "levels" on alpha channel to clamp semi-transparent parts to
transparent.

  [I would do it differently:
      do the above operation on a copy (on top);
      select (color select) non-transparent parts;
      grow the selection a little bit (4px), blur a tiny bit (2px);
      convert to a mask, and apply the mask to the ORIGINAL layer;

This way you present your transparency settings near the opaque
parts (where they may be beneficial), and gradually go to full
   transparency away from the image.]
