Text to pdf how to attach a URL to a word or phrase

I'm currently converting an ASCII text file that I create on the fly
to a PDF file. I would like to be able to attach a (hidden) link so
that if I click on a specific word in the PDF file, it will invoke my
browser and take me to that link.
For example, if this is a line in my PDF file:
I like the zoo.
I'd like to be able to click on 'zoo' and have it bring up a URL that
I've somehow attached to it.
Are there any (non-GUI) tools that can do this?

The way I do it is create a Word document. In Word you can "insert" a
hyperlink and then do a Print to PDF using the PDF icon on the Word Menu
bar.

If you are creating the text file by a program, then maybe this may
help:
